出生地　アメリカ合衆国 ペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグ
1954年から1955年にかけてホレス・シルヴァーと初代のジャズ・メッセンジャーズを結成。クリフォード・ブラウンやルー・ドナルドソンらを擁してジャズ・クラブのバードランドに出演して人気を博した。
1956年シルヴァーが脱退した後、ブレイキーは晩年までメッセンジャーズのリーダーとして活躍した
リー・モーガン、ボビー・ティモンズ、ウェイン・ショーター、フレディ・ハバード、キース・ジャレット、チャック・マンジョーネ、シダー・ウォルトン、レジー・ワークマン、
ウィントン・マルサリス、ブランフォード・マルサリス、テレンス・ブランチャード、マルグリュー・ミラー、ジェイムス・ウィリアムス、ロニー・プラキシコ、ケニー・ギャレットなどがメッセンジャーズ出身スター
